Retail Row is accepting a new cryptocurrency payment option according to a tweet shared by Monero on January 1st. Retail Row is a store that carries the popular online game, Fortnite. Released in July 2017, Fortnite is an online game that was developed by Epic Games and accounts for over 125 million players across the globe. As of October 2018, Epic Games is valued at around $15 billion dollars. Retail Row supports GloBee, a cryptocurrency payment service that permits retailers to accept crypto from XRP (Ripple), LTC (Litecoin), and BTC (Bitcoin). The only digital currency the store supports is XMR. Customers can also pay with PayPal or credit cards which are more conventional. In October, it was reported that Malwarebytes, a cybersecurity firm, found scammers targeting the Bitcoin wallets of a large number of Fortnite gamers through the use of malware. The cybercriminals were sneaking potentially dangerous data theft codes into downloads for free versions of Fortnite season 6 on Android devices as well as other fraudulent aimbots, wallhacks, and counterfeit cheats. Also according to the investigation, an in-game currency known as Free V-Bucks attempted to hide malicious code packages. Malwarebytes uncovered misleading links which were promoted through fake YouTube channels. These links redirected gamers to downloads that contained the malware in question. Back in June, Palo Alto Networks, an enterprise and network security company, revealed that over 5% of the XMR that’s in circulation was maliciously mined through cryptojacking. Monero was facing a monopoly on cryptocurrencies that were targeted by malware. Over $175 million dollars worth of crypto was maliciously mined. The report then goes on to state that the data doesn’t include web-based miners such as those from Monero, which indicates that the 5% calculation is much too low. According to CoinMarketCap, XMR is currently up about 3.27 percent and at press time was trading at $47.46.
